Glulam at Durham University

The University of Durham embarked on a major development of research and teaching facilities at the beginning of 2011. This exciting new, architect-designed building complex uses a large number of curved, glued-laminated timber members which are a major feature of the design; and these were supplied by Constructional Timber (Barnsley) Ltd.

In the middle of 2011, TFT Woodexperts were asked to investigate a problem at the site, where work was now well under way, to inspect a number of the glulam beams which were showing blue-black “spotting” on them, after they had been delivered and stored on site for a few days.

Metal contamination was suspected: and Jim Coulson, TFT's Director, visited and examined the beams and he was able to confirm that it was indeed contamination from an unknown source (although it was unlikely to have been from the suppliers, since no beams stored at their premises were exhibiting this “spotting” effect). A regime of chemical application, followed by washing down with clean water, was recommended; and this enabled the construction work to continue on schedule.

The buildings are now nearing completion and are a significant addition to the skyline of Durham City and to the University campus.
