Windows on Paradise
Expert timber knowledge certainly takes you places. TFT Woodexperts have recently completed a three-year design, build & installation project for a villa in the Caribbean, from advising on the species to overseeing the installation of multiple sets of timber windows, complete with electronic rain sensor-operated louvres, and external timber doors.
Three potential species – Iroko, Teak and Idigbo – were identified, based on natural durability in the Caribbean location, ease of machining, and low movement (shrinkage) in service against a backdrop of humidity fluctuations on the island. Idigbo best met the technical requirements, and also the client’s desire for accepting a certain colour stain.
Woodexperts' Simon Brock produced multiple sets of drawings as client requirements adapted during the process, and worked with a local Yorkshire-based joinery and engineering firms on the design and build phase in the UK. The components were shipped out, arriving earlier this spring and, after installation and testing, are contributing to keeping the property secure and weather-tight while internal works continue.
The client commented: “My initial enquiry was for specialist advice on the ideal wood product required for a difficult overseas environment. But what rapidly became clear was that TFT Woodexperts had the ability to manage the entire project, which enabled my wife and I to end up with a bespoke and perfect set of wood products for the Caribbean property that we have been building. Without their invaluable insight we would have stalled at key stages in the project. We are hugely indebted to the TFT Woodexperts team for having stuck with us, and with the project, helping to deliver a result that matched our original hopes and aspirations."
